USTUR 0102: The USTR's First Whole Body Donation

The USTR received its first whole body donation in March 1979. The donor, Stuart E. Gunn, was a research chemist who had a significant, long standing internal deposition of 241Am. The Dosimetry Subcommittee of the Advisory Committee helped the USTR's small staff to process this first whole body case and several collaborating scientists assisted as well. The entire October 1985 issue of the Journal of Health Physics was devoted to data from this case and half of Dr. Gunn's skeleton was encased in tissue equivalent plastic. This unique anthropomorphic phantom is used for calibrating whole body counting systems at DOE laboratories and internationally.
