The Landauer Memorial Lectureship was instituted in Chicago in 1971 under the auspices of Northwestern University in honor of Dr. Robert S. Landauer, a prominent radiological physicist and teacher for many years in the Chicago area. His students, friends, and family initially funded this award. In 1973, the Landauer Lectureship was established and sponsored by R.S. Landauer, Jr., and Company, now known as Landauer, Incorporated. The Landauer Lectures were presented at Midwest and Western regional meetings of Health Physics Society chapters until 1999 at which time the Health Physics Society agreed to incorporate the Robert S. Landauer, Sr. Memorial Lecture into the annual meeting Plenary Session.
