USTUR 0140: Rocky Flats — 239Pu — Minimal Intake
Intake
This Registrant worked at the Rocky Flats Plant from the mid 1950s through the late 1960s. He had no recorded intake incidents.
Health Physics
Eight urine samples were collected between 1966 and 1968. These were analyzed for gross alpha, uranium, 239Pu, and/or 241Am. One gross alpha measurement (2.1 dpm/24-h in 1966) and two plutonium measurements (0.59 and 0.45 dpm/24-h in 1967) exceeded the MDA/2. The contemporary MDA/2 was 0.35 dpm/24-h for gross alpha and 0.27 dpm/24-h for Pu.
No in-vivo analyses were performed on this subject.
The Registrant’s total external (penetrating) radiation dose was recorded as 0.802 rem.
Autopsy and Pathology
The Registrant died at age 62 y from alcoholic cirrhosis of the liver.
Portions of the right and left lung, thoracic lymph nodes, liver, kidneys, spleen, testes, thyroid, rib, sternum, patella, and vertebrae were taken at autopsy.
Contemporary Dose Estimates
The last plutonium body burden estimates made by Rocky Flats personnel are as follows:
| % of Maximum Permissible Burden |
Maximum Permissible Burden |
Calculated Estimate of Burden |
|
| Systemic Burden | 3 % | 40 nCi | 1.2 nCi |
| Lung Burden | No Estimate Available | 16 nCi | - |
